How to calm the serial queue at a doctor's chamber

Patients wait for hours in a crowded room while the assistant answers the phone all day. A few changes to how serials work make a chamber calm. Here is how.

The doctor sits at 6 pm. Patients start arriving at 3, because nobody knows when their turn will come. Thirty or forty people in a small waiting room, a child crying, older patients standing. The assistant holds the phone in one hand and writes names in a notebook with the other.

This is almost every chamber in Bangladesh. The problem is not the doctor's time. It is information: patients do not know when to come, so they come early and wait.

Keep one way to take serials

Many chambers take serials from three places at once: the assistant's phone, the notebook at the counter, and personal requests. The same number gets given twice, someone is skipped, and arguments start.

Put every serial in one list, whether it came by phone or at the counter.

Tell patients which number is being seen now

If a patient can see from home that "number 12 is with the doctor, you are 18", they will not sit in the chamber for three hours. This single piece of information does more for the waiting room than anything else.

The simple version is a live link that shows the current serial. Better still, the patient's phone is told on its own when their turn is close.

When the doctor is late, tell everyone at once

The doctor is held up in surgery, or will not sit today. Now the assistant calls fifty people one by one, or patients arrive and go home again.

A way to message every booked patient with one tap removes all of that.

Do not forget patients with basic phones

Not every patient has a smartphone; many use a button phone. Make sure serials also work by SMS, and that the assistant can add names from the counter.

Keep each patient's history at hand

For a follow-up visit, finding last time's prescription and reports takes minutes. When a patient's records are in one place, the doctor can look before calling them in, and each visit gets a little shorter.

How MediQ does it

We built MediQ for this problem:

  • Patients get a serial by scanning the chamber's QR code, opening a link or sending one SMS.
  • From home they see which number is being seen and how many are ahead, and their phone tells them when to leave.
  • When the doctor taps "running late" or "not sitting today", every patient is told by push notification and SMS.
  • Prescriptions and lab reports stay together in the patient's record.

Start small

You do not have to change everything on day one. For one week, just start showing patients the current serial. You will see the difference in the waiting room yourself.

A calm waiting room means happier patients, a less stressed assistant, and a doctor with more attention for each person.
