Small ways to keep a daily habit of salah and Quran

It starts strong in Ramadan, then slowly slips. Practical ways to keep praying on time and reading a little Quran every day, all year.

In Ramadan many of us keep a wonderful routine: five prayers on time, Quran every day, dua at night. A few weeks after Eid, much of it has slipped again. It is rarely a lack of will. Usually it is a lack of method for building the habit.

Here are a few small methods that have helped many people.

Start very small

If you begin with "one juz a day", a busy day makes it impossible, and missing one day breaks the whole plan. Begin instead with one page a day, or even a few verses. A small goal gets done every day, and getting it done every day is what builds the habit.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are small. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Attach it to something you already do

A new habit sticks best when it follows something you already do. For example:

  • After Fajr, still sitting on the prayer mat, read one page.
  • After Isha, before sleep, the morning and evening adhkar.
  • Straight after you get home from work, pray Asr before anything else.

You never have to decide "when shall I read?"; the first action reminds you.

Stop guessing the prayer times

Prayers are often missed simply because we lose track of when Asr ends or Maghrib begins. Accurate times, and a reminder before each prayer, remove most of that.

Tick it off and watch the streak

There is a surprising satisfaction in a small tick. Mark each prayer and each day's reading, and after a few days you will see a streak you do not want to break.

But remember: the tick is not the goal. If you miss a day, do not punish yourself. Start again tomorrow.

Do it with your family

Keeping a habit alone is hard; together it is easier. Agree on something as a family, such as one surah to memorise each week, or ten minutes of reading together after Maghrib. Encourage each other rather than compete.

How Qadamiq helps

We built Qadamiq to make these habits easier:

  • Prayer times are calculated on your phone for your location, without internet, with a reminder and the adhan before each prayer.
  • It points to the Qibla.
  • The Quran in Arabic, with Dr. Abu Bakr Muhammad Zakaria's Bangla translation.
  • Daily missions for prayers, Quran, adhkar and your own goals, with ticks and streaks.
  • Family and friends groups where you can encourage each other.
  • No ads and no tracking. Without an account, nothing leaves your phone.

Start today

Choose one small goal today, such as one page after Fajr. Keep only that for a week, then add one more. A little at a time, but every day.
